It might be useful for you and your students to know what the Souther LEADERS said their important issues were. The Southern newspapers announced the Five Ultimatums as "THE TRUE ISSUE" in their headlines.
So if the Southern leaders thought these were the "true issue" and the Southern press thought it was the "true issue" and said so at the time, then maybe, it was the "true issue" as they saw it.
All five ultumatums were about the spread of slavery.
